Effects of consonant aspiration on Mandarin tones
نویسندگان
چکیده
The influence of consonant aspiration on the F0 contours of tones in Mandarin Chinese was tested in continuous speech by reference to a minimal pair of syllables, /ta/ and /tÓa/, which differ only in terms of aspiration. It was found that, consonant aspiration affects the fundamental frequency (F0) of the following vowel. The onset F0 of a tone is higher following unaspirated consonants than following aspirated consonants, and the magnitude of the differences are related to the tone itself as well as the preceding tone. The underlying mechanisms of this effect, as well as its interaction with other effects on F0 contours, are discussed.

Mandarin Lexical Tone Recognition: The Gating Paradigm
Research on spoken word recognition in Indo-European languages often does not incorporate prosody. In Mandarin Chinese, however, lexical prosody is used extensively and has been shown to affect word processing in previous studies. The present study uses the gating paradigm to investigate the processing of the four Mandarin tones as well as the role of the initial segment in processing. Duration...
متن کاملMismatch responses to lexical tone, initial consonant, and vowel in Mandarin-speaking preschoolers.
The present study investigates how age, phonological saliency, and deviance size affect the presence of mismatch negativity (MMN) and positive mismatch response (P-MMR). This work measured the auditory mismatch responses to Mandarin lexical tones, initial consonants, and vowels in 4- to 6-year-old preschoolers using the multiple-deviant oddball paradigm. The data showed the coexistence of MMN a...
متن کاملEffects of language experience and expectations on attention to consonants and tones in English and Mandarin Chinese.
Both long-term native language experience and immediate linguistic expectations can affect listeners' use of acoustic information when making a phonetic decision. In this study, a Garner selective attention task was used to investigate differences in attention to consonants and tones by American English-speaking listeners (N = 20) and Mandarin Chinese-speaking listeners hearing speech in either...
متن کاملDirecting Attention During Perceptual Training: A Preliminary Study of Phonetic Learning in Southern Min by Mandarin Speakers
Previous studies have shown that directing learners’ attention during perceptual training facilitates detection and learning of unfamiliar consonant categories [1, 2]. The current study asks whether this attentional directing can also facilitate other types of phonetic learning. Monolingual Mandarin speakers were divided into two groups directed to learn either 1) the consonants or 2) the tones...
متن کاملInconsistent Consonantal Effects on F0 in Cantonese and Mandarin
Previous research shows that aspiration and sonorancy can have inconsistent consonantal effects on vowel F0 across languages, and even within the same language in different studies: they are reported to either lower F0, raise F0, or have neutral effects. This paper is interested in such inconsistent consonantal effects on vowel F0 in Cantonese and Mandarin. The results of a series of production...
